Covid was a massive reset button for the way we think about work and our workspaces. Can it be done better? Can a working environment be changed to increase output and employee productivity? Our firm belief is that this is all possible. The installation of a Living Green Wall will bring about a positive change in staff productivity. Wired website reported that adding plants to a workspace can increase productivity by 15%.

Plants improve air quality, which increases productivity

VOCs are a productivity problem. VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds that human beings release. These are obviously higher in workspaces and in enclosed spaces – making it harder to breathe and be productive. VOCs impact people and their places of work by causing allergies, fatigue, headaches and even nervous system disorders. They cause more health issues, more sick days off and low productivity. The good news is that plants are VOCs absorbers. Their leaves absorb all VOCs, pulling them into the root system where microbes can then break them down. A NASA study led by BC Wolverton published in 1989 on Environment Pollution found that plants could absorb more than 85% of VOCs in a 24 hour period. That means healthier employees, fewer sick days and increased productivity. Plants also release fungus and bacteria fighting Phytochemicals as well as regulating the humidity of an environment. The air quality that plants bring to a work environment has been proven to increase productivity.

Plants improve overall mental wellbeing, which increases productivity

A study conducted at Texas A & M University and sited in Psychology Today in 2019 found that plants could reduce stress, depression and PTSD symptoms. Staff who are able to emotionally regulate stress and mental triggers can be less distracted and more focussed on tasks and targets. Less stress means improved productivity.

Green is the colour of creativity, which increases productivity

Interestingly, the colour green itself, is a trigger to improved creativity. A study – Fertile Green: Green Facilitates Creative Performance (2012) – by Dr. Stephanie Lichtenfeld suggests “Green may serve as a cue that evokes the motivation to strive for improvement and task mastery, which in turn may facilitate growth”. So looking up from your workspace and taking in the shades of greenery of will increase a team’s creative ability to problem solving and planning.

Plants reduce noise pollution, which increases productivity

Plants absorb sound, which makes them an ideal damper to the usual office noise hum of computers, phone calls and conversations. This has proven to increase concentration in open plan work environments, which leads to increased productivity (Work Design).

Plants make work spaces more attractive to staff, which increases productivity

The science of how humans interact with nature is called Biophilia, a term coined by Edward O Wilson in his book Biophillia (1984). Biophilia is the way humanity longs for connection with nature. This longing of connection with nature can be met by simply introducing plants into the workspace. Staff surveys show that places of work without plant life are less attractive, which leads to clock-watching to escape. Having plants in a workspace will attract potential employees and will encourage established employees to enjoy their workspace for longer.

A green identity produces purpose in employees, which increases productivity

We live in a conscientious society where making small decisions for global good are widely appreciated. When greenery is added into an office space the carbon footprint of a company is offset. This choice is universally viewed as positive. Consider the positive impact that will have on employee purpose and as a result in productivity (Click and Grow).

This blog post really resonated with me as it highlighted the significant impact of a living green wall on employee productivity. The idea that a simple addition of plants to the workspace can lead to a 15% increase in productivity is remarkable. I found the explanation of how plants improve air quality particularly intriguing. The ability of plants to absorb VOCs and release phytochemicals that fight against fungus and bacteria is truly impressive. The reference to the NASA study demonstrating that plants can absorb over 85% of VOCs in just 24 hours reinforces the positive effects of incorporating greenery in the workplace. The potential benefits of healthier employees, reduced sick days, and improved productivity make a compelling case for investing in a living green wall. Thank you for sharing this valuable information and shedding light on the transformative power of plants in work environments.
